Political situation in Italy [NOV 19]

The next elections to be held in Italy are regional ones: in Emilia-Romagna and Calabria in January 2019. Next year there will also be elections in Veneto, Campania, Tuscany, Marche and Liguria in may 2019.

The Five Star Movement, the party that differs most from all the other parties, has decided to participate in the upcoming elections of Emilia and Calabria.

The decision was taken after voting online on the movement subscribers platform. The decision obviously displaced many, because the movement, not having many candidates, and above all being in decline in the polls, could fail.
In any case, the decision has been taken and what the members have decided will be done.

In recent months, especially from the European elections of May 2019, the Italian right is increasing its support, to the detriment of the five-star movement and the Democratic Party, that is, at the expense of parties with more supporters.

There is an environment of anger and hatred in Italy, between those who call themselves anti-fascist and those who believe themselves to be right-wing.

Difficult to explain what politics is in Italy and above all political culture. From the 50s in Italy there has always been an anti-fascist culture, even when the fascimo was non-existent. Whenever we talk about the fight against migrants, because Italy and tortured by illegal immigrants the “anti-fascists” must oppose even when there is no need. Probably the bogeyman of fascism is always in the memory of many, even if in recent years mainly in the memory of those who studied it in books. And this is perhaps the greatest danger for the supporters of the left: that most of those who lived through the war years or the fathers or grandparents of the grandchildren are no longer here.

The current government, with the PD-M5S alliance, although it is going ahead with the budget maneuver and with some reforms, does not seem to have a long life, especially if the right should win in some important regions. The emilia is a region that could act as a balance point because it has always been a region of the left and should win the Lega (right) would be a historical fact. However in the last few days some students of the University of Emilia (Bologna in particular) have created a protest that has gathered thousands of people into madness. The protest is called ‘Sardine’.

Many support the Lega party (right) because they think the Migrants issue is of vital importance. Undoubtedly, Italy cannot continue to host illegal immigrants forever. But there are also many problems that only concern Italy. The five-star movement is probably the only party that is trying to do the right things, although now it is seen as a caste party, passing in a few days from the alliance with the right to the left.

Italian Government: Prime Minister Conte resigns

During the meeting held in the Senate Giuseppe Conte harshly criticized Matteo Salvini in his speech and announced his resignation after his speech.

Matteo Salvini, deputy premier and interior minister, responded during his speech that he has no regrets about everything he did in the 14 months of the yellow-green government.

During the last few months, however, something has broken and the agreement with the Lega (Salvini) andΒ  M5S (Luigi Di Maio) has not worked anymore.

However, each party accuses the other of treason the irrefutable truth is that of Matteo Salvini and the league wanted to create the crisis to go to the elections because the polls give it to almost 40% when instead at the beginning of the legislature it arrived with difficulty at 20%.

The construction of the TAV (high speed train) that could connect Italy (Piedmont) with France (Lyon) has been repeatedly rejected by the five-star movement. The Lega used this disagreement as a pretext to break the coalition.

During these months of government many concrete things have been done such as the 100 share for the pension, the income of citizenship and the security decree that in addition to favoring the legitimate defense puts many restrictions on the landing of migrants, a very real topic, to which the Italy probably never gave the right weight, although it was always penalized geographically.

The fight against illegal immigration is a workhorse of the Lega, and on which it has gained many of the current consents.

We still don’t know how the future will evolve but the certainty is that in the autumn there will be elections. The M5S could ally with the PD and this could imply a fundamental role on the new political lines.
